Graphene-based system could lead to improved information processing

June 21, 2013 ? Researchers at MIT have proposed a new system that combines ferroelectric materials -- the kind often used for data storage -- with graphene, a two-dimensional form of carbon known for its exceptional electronic and mechanical properties. The resulting hybrid technology could eventually lead to computer and data-storage chips that pack more components in a given area and are faster and less power-hungry.

The new system works by controlling waves called surface plasmons. These waves are oscillations of electrons confined at interfaces between materials; in the new system the waves operate at terahertz frequencies. Such frequencies lie between those of far-infrared light and microwave radio transmissions, and are considered ideal for next-generation computing devices.

The findings were reported in a paper in Applied Physics Letters by associate professor of mechanical engineering Nicholas Fang, postdoc Dafei Jin and three others.

The system would provide a new way to construct interconnected devices that use light waves, such as fiber-optic cables and photonic chips, with electronic wires and devices. Currently, such interconnection points often form a bottleneck that slows the transfer of data and adds to the number of components needed.

The team's new system allows waves to be concentrated at much smaller length scales, which could lead to a tenfold gain in the density of components that could be placed in a given area of a chip, Fang says.

The team's initial proof-of-concept device uses a small piece of graphene sandwiched between two layers of the ferroelectric material to make simple, switchable plasmonic waveguides. This work used lithium niobate, but many other such materials could be used, the researchers say.

Light can be confined in these waveguides down to one part in a few hundreds of the free-space wavelength, Jin says, which represents an order-of-magnitude improvement over any comparable waveguide system. "This opens up exciting areas for transmitting and processing optical signals," he says.

Moreover, the work may provide a new way to read and write electronic data into ferroelectric memory devices at very high speed, the MIT researchers say.

Dimitri Basov, a professor of physics at the University of California at San Diego who was not connected with this research, says the MIT team "proposed a very interesting plasmonic structure, suitable for operation in the technologically significant [terahertz] range. ? I am confident that many research groups will try to implement these devices."

Basov cautions, however, "The key issue, as in all of plasmonics, is losses. Losses need to be thoroughly explored and understood."

In addition to Fang and Jin, the research was carried out by graduate student Anshuman Kumar, former postdoc Kin Hung Fung (now at Hong Kong Polytechnic University), and research scientist Jun Xu. It was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

HAILEY, Idaho (Reuters) - An estimated 2,000 supporters rallied on Saturday in the Idaho hometown of prisoner-of-war Bowe Bergdahl to call for the safe return of the U.S. Army sergeant believed to be held captive by Taliban militants in northwestern Pakistan.

The rally, the largest yet for the only known American prisoner of war tied to the Afghanistan war, marked the latest effort by residents of Hailey, a close-knit town of 7,000, to draw attention to Bergdahl's plight and push for his release.

Bergdahl, now 27, was serving with an Alaska-based infantry unit when he disappeared from his base in southern Afghanistan in June 2009 and was taken captive by the Taliban.

The gathering in Hailey capped a week of renewed hope for Bergdahl's release after reports that planned peace talks between the United States and the Taliban could yield a possible prisoner swap as a confidence-building measure.

U.S. officials were due to hold preliminary discussions with the Taliban on Thursday on ending the 12-year-old war but they were called off when Afghan President Hamid Karzai objected to the fanfare surrounding the militant's opening of an office in Qatar.

In Idaho, hundreds of motorcyclists from clubs tied to helping the causes of veterans and prisoners-of-war escorted Bergdahl's father, Bob, to a local park, where he and his wife Jani spoke in a rare public appearance.

Bob Bergdahl pleaded with the Taliban to provide news of his son and then addressed him directly. "Bowe, my son, if you can hear me ... You are part of the peace process. You are part of ending the Afghan war," the father said.

'HAVE FAITH'

Bob Bergdahl spoke in Pashto to the Taliban, using their language to encourage them and "those who believe" to bring good to the world. He urged his son: "Have faith. Do good work. Have the patience that can only come from God."

Jani Bergdahl told her son he was not forgotten. "I love you, my son, as I have from the moment I heard of you."

In a statement earlier this month, Bergdahl said he and his wife had received a letter from their son that gave them hope that he is well despite his circumstances.

The trees on Hailey's main street have been decorated with yellow ribbons for four years to show that the town - sandwiched between a trout stream and the Sawtooth Mountains - has not forgotten its native son.

Banners that read "Bring Bowe home" and "We stand with Bowe" hung in storefronts and supporters handed out stickers and wristbands honoring the soldier.

"When something happens to one person in our community, it happens to everyone in our community," said Debbie O'Neill, a family friend who organized the rally. "None of us will rest until Bowe's safely home."

Hailey Assistant Fire Chief Jon Wisby spent much of Saturday shepherding a procession of bikers whose riding leathers were stamped with American flag and POW-MIA insignia.

Asked how his community had responded to news of the proposed talks between the United States and the Taliban, Wisby said, "There's definitely more of a possibility of Bowe coming home now than there was in the past. And this may be our last opportunity to get him home."

"I think that is what the best athletes do. They don't dwell on their championships or records. As soon as they win one, all you want to do is find something new and move toward that."

Wambach came into the friendly at Red Bull Arena needing two goals to tie Hamm.

The chase for Hamm's record of 158 was over with three goals in the opening 29 minutes. She added another in injury time to give her a nice round number.

Ali Daie of Iran holds the men's record with 109.

"I can't say how much I look up to Mia and how amazing the record she set was," said Wambach, who was doused with a bucket of water after the game.

"From being her teammate early in her career, I know all she ever wanted to do was win, and she continues to do that. I'm just glad I got to share 158 with her. It was short, but it was fun."

After the record-setting goal, Wambach turned and ran a couple of steps in the direction of the U.S. bench, then stopped as Rapinoe jumped into her arms. The Rochester, N.Y., native was then mobbed by teammates on the field and those who streamed off the bench as the crowd of 18,961 at Red Bull Arena cheered wildly.

"My teammates know me super well, and at halftime they said: 'You're such an extremist. You are all or nothing. When you want to do something, you just go do it,'" Wambach said of getting the record. "I am very much like my father in that way."

Other than "perfect ball," Rapinoe quipped, the only thing she said after the goal was, "YESSSS!"

"I'm just so happy for her," Rapinoe said. "This was an amazing, amazing accomplishment in way less games, the way she has done it. It's incredible to be a part of it."
