Android Native Development Kit Cookbook ? a review

Just before I come up for air and start blogging in earnest I received an interesting offer to review another Android book.? if you cast you mind back I did a review of ?Android 4: New features for Application Development? (http://bit.ly/12E5q2u) which was a good highlight of the new bits, this book takes you back to basics and walks you through setting up, your first app and beyond.

1505OT

If you are new to Android development then you?ll need a good starter book, for example ?Android NDK Beginner?s Guide? (http://bit.ly/12E6Qdn)

If you?re interested in learning more about Android development this book will certainly expand your horizons, as this is a cookbook though you will need to know the lingo when it comes to Android development.

The Android native development is targeted for any serious Android programmer?s reference shelf as a single source of reference for the most common programming issues on the Android platform.

It?s certainly not aimed at the absolute beginner as some appreciation and knowledge of the Android platform and basic Java / C++ skills are expected, it delivers a good and well-rounded development guide style reference for programming apps and games on Android.

There?s even a good programmer?s reference section showing you how Android treats even the most basic concepts and how to use then effectively.

So long as you have read any of the ?dummies? guides you will have enough knowledge for this book to pick you up and get you building effectively AND if you also gain access to the bonus chapters you will even have Wolfenstien 3D running on your device in no time Open-mouthed smile

Here?s a brief run through what all the chapters are and what to expect from them.?? The book is laid out like a traditional cookbook focusing on each specific component and laying it out bare.

Chapter 1 ?Hello NDK?

To really start the book off on the right foot, this chapter walks you through everything you need to get Android development setup on your machine, unlike most Android books it also shows you on a Mac and Linux, not just on Windows.

Gets you up and running with everything you need from the correct Java and Android SDK versions plus setting up Eclipse for your development environment. (If you wished you could use Xamarin studio as an alternative to Eclipse, still free)

?

The Chapter finishes up with a traditional ?Hello World? app just to test you got everything setup and working.

?

Chapter 2 ?Java Native Interface?

Chapter 2 for all intents and purposes is a good and well-rounded programming reference for building Android apps using JNI (basically Android?s version of .NET), working though basic and advanced samples alike for base programming constants, such as:

  • Loading native libraries and registering native methods
  • Passing parameters and receiving returns in primitive types
  • Manipulating strings, references, classes, objects and arrays in JNI
  • Accessing Java static and instance fields an methods in native code
  • Caching jfieldID, jmethodID, and reference data to improve performance
  • Checking errors and handling exceptions in JNI
  • Integrating assembly code in JNI

By the end of this chapter you should have most of what you need to be an efficient programmer on the Android platform

Chapter 3 ?Build and Debug NDK Applications?

Everyone who?s ever touched or used an Android device knows the complexity involved with the different models / capabilities and options in Android development, in this chapter you will be guided through both the how and .what the best practices are when configuring your Android solutions? and build environments.

Remember you are rarely building just one Android app but several, to cope with all the variety that exists.

This chapter also includes the know how to setup your Eclipse environment to do automated build and deployment to either an emulator or a device (obviously if you use Xamarin Studio this is already built in for you)

Chapter 4 ?Android NDK OpenGL ES API?

The graphics system makes an entrance in this chapter going through all the nitty gritty with the 2D / 3D rendering system and a basic overview for using Open GL shaders.?? It includes several basic examples to get you started with an appreciation of the area, graphics on most platforms is a very tricky area and this does a good job of explaining the basics well.

Chapter 5 ?Android Native Application API?

Here we start to get really native and work with Android Activities (pages) and working with the various input methods and sensors.? There is also an important section on Assets which is critical since it?s different on Android to most other platforms.

Chapter 6 ?Android NDK Multithreading?

One of the biggest pains on any platform is getting the performance and balance of you app or game right and running at a level appropriate to the user, this becomes crucial when you start working with cheaper devices and need to drag every last ounce of what little power that device has.

Multi-threading (or breaking up your app into little chunks of processing) is the solution in many cases, as with everything though there are good ways to do multi-threading and there are bad ways.? This chapter gives a good overview and offers some good practices when it comes to multi-threading

Chapter 7 ?Other Android NDK API?

As a sum up to the programming portion of the book, here the author rounds some of the extra bits built into the standard Android SDK. It doesn?t go in to too much depth (you could probably get an entire book out of each library) but it gives you enough to give you start and a basic appreciation for what each library does.

Chapter 8 ?Porting and Using the Existing Libraries with Android NDK?

In the first of two patterns and practices chapters, this chapter covers re-using existing C++ libraries in your Androids apps which is very useful if you don?t want to write huge amounts of code yourself.? There are a vast amount of libraries both free and paid written in native code and harnessing them is crucial in all but the smallest of apps.

The chapter also covers some of the trickier parts of reusing libraries that require exception, RTTI, and STL support.

Chapter 9 ?Porting an Existing Application to Android with NDK?

Following on from the previous focus on re-using existing libraries, this chapter goes through how to take an existing native library and cross compile it for Android and then put a shim UI on it for use, the example is a nice image processing library which looks simple enough to explain all the basic concepts involved.

image

Additionally there are 2 bonus chapters which give the book a real feel of polish, both of these are accessible from the PacktPub site with your copy of the book, full details included on how to gain access to them are included in the Preface.

Bonus Chapter 1 ?Developing Multimedia Applications with NDK?

This chapter build a real world app using all of the techniques explained in the book including:

  • Porting and using the ffmpeg library to Android with NDK
  • Using the ffmpeg library to get media info and decoding / displaying video frames
  • Separating decoding and drawing with two threads
  • Seeking to playback and grabbing the frames while optimizing the performance of a multimedia app

Bonus Chapter 2 ?Developing Games with NDK?

Bringing back one of my childhood favourites this chapter leads you through downloading the freeware version (and source) to the original Wolfenstein 3D, then porting the entire game to Android including adding Android input / sensor systems and a new on screen input UI.

image

If you were looking for a reference manual for your shelf for how to build efficient Android apps and it will make a welcome addition, the bonus chapters really make the full picture so it was a shame they weren?t included in the base book but the fact they are free to anyone who has the book is very nice (get them now).

?

There is a lot of intro material included in the book including the programming guide but you must have an appreciation for Java / C++ first and read at least an ?Android for dummies? style book to learn the basic lingo.

?

Pros:
Cons:
  • Without the Bonus Sections there isn?t anything to tie everything together as a whole app, just lots of parts (as a reference book alone this should be expected)
  • No detail on managing Android Emulators which is a bit of a gap, emulators can be very tricky to setup correctly (expects devices only)

I can definitely say I learned a lot of new tips and tricks in this book and it makes a welcome companion to my reference shelf.? On my work with MonoGame this will aid me a great deal with some of the trickier backend performance problems than can be faced in complex 3D games.

The knowledge for how to really make the most out of third party native libraries will also be very handy to make games grow quicker.

All in all I can say I feel a much better Android programmer and will know where to look when my apps or games just don?t work right.

Canada?s Abel and Ware win bronze in three-metre synchro at aquatic worlds

Canadian divers Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware earned bronze in the women?s three-metre synchronized springboard at the world championships on Saturday.

Abel, from Laval, Que., and Ware, a Beloeil, Que., native, scored 292.08 for Canada?s second medal at the event. Eric Hedlin of Victoria won Canada?s first with a silver in the men?s five-kilometre open water competition.

More Related to this Story

China?s Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao took the three-metre gold, earning Wu a record sixth world title, while Italy?s Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape claimed silver with 307.80.

Abel is a two-time Olympian who teamed with Emilie Heymans the last two seasons earning bronze at the 2012 Olympics and silver at the last worlds in 2011 in Shanghai.

This year, Abel and Ware have enjoyed success together winning three international medals and two Canadian titles.

?I don?t think we have come close yet to reaching our full potential,? said Abel. ?I think we showed today how strong we are mentally by never giving up. We have a similar style and show a lot of height and power on our dives. I?m excited about the future.?

The Canadian pair had a rough start and were in 10th place with two dives remaining. However they climbed to sixth in the fourth round and third after their fifth and final twisting dive earned them a string of 7.5?s and 8.0?s.

Ware said the early rounds just fired her up.

?I was pretty angry going into that fourth dive,? said the 20-year-old. ?I was so pleased we got it in and then we sealed it with a great last dive.?

The Chinese pair?s almost flawless execution of all five dives framed by the dramatic backdrop of Barcelona?s skyline gave them the top total score of 338.40 points.

Wu has won nine world or Olympic gold medals in the three-metre synchronized springboard. The only major title to escape her was the 2005 world championship when she didn?t compete in the event.

This was Wu?s first major competition with Shi, who won gold in the one-metre springboard at the 2011 worlds.

Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia clocked 53 minutes 30.4 seconds to win the men?s open water. Hedlin was 1.2 seconds behind, and five-time world champion Thomas Lurz of Germany finished third, 1.8 back.

?I am really happy because I didn?t expect (to beat Lurz),? Hedlin said. ?It felt pretty good. I was trying to hold a top position and stay in everyone?s draft. In the final sprint Oussama was so much quicker than me and I couldn?t do anything to beat him.?

Earlier, China?s Li Shixin topped the preliminaries in the men?s one-metre springboard.

Li, the defending one-metre springboard champion, led the men?s qualification for Monday?s final with 405 points, but a poor last dive let France?s Matthieu Rosset finish only 0.5 points behind.

Li looked ready to end the preliminaries with a commanding points difference until he missed with a three-and-a-half somersault pike on the sixth and final dive and barely edged Rosset for the top spot.

Illya Kvasha of Ukraine was third in qualifying, followed by Alejandro Chavez of Mexico in fourth and Sebastian Morales of Colombia in fifth.

Francois Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., placed 27th.

'Bomber' cover issue could be boon for Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone Magazine viReuters

Accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is seen on the cover of the August 1 issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine in this handout image. Despite a boycott, magazine industry experts do not believe the controversy will hurt Rolling Stone's circulation

Rolling Stone may end up proving that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

The magazine likely won't be hurt by the social media firestorm and subsequent boycott over putting one of the alleged Boston bombers on the front cover. On the contrary, it could even see a boost, experts said on Thursday.

"It may be seen as a bad decision to put a criminal or a killer on the cover, but Rolling Stone took a gamble," said Samir Husni, director of the magazine innovation center at the University of Mississippi. "In the long-term this is not going to hurt them.

The reason? Most of the magazine's 1.46 million circulation comes from subscriptions.

At least five retailers, including CVS and Walgreens, said they will not sell the Rolling Stone issue featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover.

The picture, which accompanies a story titled "Jahar's World," shows the 19-year-old accused murderer with tousled hair, reminiscent of the magazine's iconic shots of rock stars like The Doors' Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan.

The issue ? which hits newsstands Friday ? depicts Tsarnaev above the headline, "The Bomber." The story, which features interviews with childhood friends, teachers and law enforcement agents, promises to reveal how a ?popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster."

"I don't think anybody truly believes this will hurt Rolling Stone," said Linda Ruth, a magazine publishing consultant with PSCS in New Hampshire.

"Rolling Stone knew going in they would get kicked out by retailers," she said. "What they get here is bigger than what they lose."

Rolling Stone, like most U.S. magazines, is subscription-driven. According to ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations), its newsstand sales are just 75,000 out of a total circulation of over 1.4 million last year.

"Newsstand sales are only a tiny proportion. But Rolling Stone also got more publicity than money can buy," he said, suggesting the controversy could help the magazine add more sales.

"They probably won't even notice this (boycott)," said Ryan Chittum, who covers business stories for the Columbia Journalism Review. "There may be a few cancellations but no big deal."

Husni also said there was a misconception that Rolling Stone is only about music and popular culture. "Rolling Stone is one of the few magazines still publishing in-depth and long-form investigative articles in the U.S.

"This is nothing new to Rolling Stone," he said of the magazine, which won a National Magazine Award for its 1970 prison interview with mass murderer Charles Manson, who was featured on the cover.

Two years ago, Rolling Stone's story on Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, included unflattering comments about Vice President Joe Biden and other White House House officials and led to McChrystal's resignation.

"Unfortunately, the public is emotionally driven and this mass hysteria is the biggest threat to journalism," said Husni. "This is not Kim Kardashian, this is a serious mag and journalists cannot be driven by public opinion. You can't allow the public to dictate what journalists do."

He said people were comparing the cover photo to Dylan or Morrison or Bono. "That's the problem. The glamorization of the photo shows that people did not read the article."

Rolling Stone was co-founded by Jann Wenner who is still owner and chief editor. It has always been known for its musical coverage and for political reporting by journalists such as Hunter S. Thompson. But in the 1990s, Wenner changed its format to appeal to a younger readership interested in TV, movie stars and popular music.

It was not the only magazine cover to spark controversy. Time magazine had a women breastfeeding her toddler son on its cover recently and there was a very pregnant and very naked Demi Moore on the front of Vanity Fair, while The New Yorker had Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie snuggling on a couch as they watch the Supreme Court justices on TV after the Defense of Marriage Act decision.

"The number of people who never read Rolling Stone who buy this issue will outnumber the people who boycott it," said Bob Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.

He said it stirred up emotions because people like to think of terrorists and criminals as inhuman monsters. "That cover made him look human, like us, and that makes people nervous," said Thompson. "If they had used the police mug-shot, there would be no issue.

"Some bad publicity can be very useful," said Thompson.
