Android Native Development Kit Cookbook ? a review

Just before I come up for air and start blogging in earnest I received an interesting offer to review another Android book.? if you cast you mind back I did a review of ?Android 4: New features for Application Development? (http://bit.ly/12E5q2u) which was a good highlight of the new bits, this book takes you back to basics and walks you through setting up, your first app and beyond.

1505OT

If you are new to Android development then you?ll need a good starter book, for example ?Android NDK Beginner?s Guide? (http://bit.ly/12E6Qdn)

If you?re interested in learning more about Android development this book will certainly expand your horizons, as this is a cookbook though you will need to know the lingo when it comes to Android development.

The Android native development is targeted for any serious Android programmer?s reference shelf as a single source of reference for the most common programming issues on the Android platform.

It?s certainly not aimed at the absolute beginner as some appreciation and knowledge of the Android platform and basic Java / C++ skills are expected, it delivers a good and well-rounded development guide style reference for programming apps and games on Android.

There?s even a good programmer?s reference section showing you how Android treats even the most basic concepts and how to use then effectively.

So long as you have read any of the ?dummies? guides you will have enough knowledge for this book to pick you up and get you building effectively AND if you also gain access to the bonus chapters you will even have Wolfenstien 3D running on your device in no time Open-mouthed smile

Here?s a brief run through what all the chapters are and what to expect from them.?? The book is laid out like a traditional cookbook focusing on each specific component and laying it out bare.

Chapter 1 ?Hello NDK?

To really start the book off on the right foot, this chapter walks you through everything you need to get Android development setup on your machine, unlike most Android books it also shows you on a Mac and Linux, not just on Windows.

Gets you up and running with everything you need from the correct Java and Android SDK versions plus setting up Eclipse for your development environment. (If you wished you could use Xamarin studio as an alternative to Eclipse, still free)

?

The Chapter finishes up with a traditional ?Hello World? app just to test you got everything setup and working.

?

Chapter 2 ?Java Native Interface?

Chapter 2 for all intents and purposes is a good and well-rounded programming reference for building Android apps using JNI (basically Android?s version of .NET), working though basic and advanced samples alike for base programming constants, such as:

  • Loading native libraries and registering native methods
  • Passing parameters and receiving returns in primitive types
  • Manipulating strings, references, classes, objects and arrays in JNI
  • Accessing Java static and instance fields an methods in native code
  • Caching jfieldID, jmethodID, and reference data to improve performance
  • Checking errors and handling exceptions in JNI
  • Integrating assembly code in JNI

By the end of this chapter you should have most of what you need to be an efficient programmer on the Android platform

Chapter 3 ?Build and Debug NDK Applications?

Everyone who?s ever touched or used an Android device knows the complexity involved with the different models / capabilities and options in Android development, in this chapter you will be guided through both the how and .what the best practices are when configuring your Android solutions? and build environments.

Remember you are rarely building just one Android app but several, to cope with all the variety that exists.

This chapter also includes the know how to setup your Eclipse environment to do automated build and deployment to either an emulator or a device (obviously if you use Xamarin Studio this is already built in for you)

Chapter 4 ?Android NDK OpenGL ES API?

The graphics system makes an entrance in this chapter going through all the nitty gritty with the 2D / 3D rendering system and a basic overview for using Open GL shaders.?? It includes several basic examples to get you started with an appreciation of the area, graphics on most platforms is a very tricky area and this does a good job of explaining the basics well.

Chapter 5 ?Android Native Application API?

Here we start to get really native and work with Android Activities (pages) and working with the various input methods and sensors.? There is also an important section on Assets which is critical since it?s different on Android to most other platforms.

Chapter 6 ?Android NDK Multithreading?

One of the biggest pains on any platform is getting the performance and balance of you app or game right and running at a level appropriate to the user, this becomes crucial when you start working with cheaper devices and need to drag every last ounce of what little power that device has.

Multi-threading (or breaking up your app into little chunks of processing) is the solution in many cases, as with everything though there are good ways to do multi-threading and there are bad ways.? This chapter gives a good overview and offers some good practices when it comes to multi-threading

Chapter 7 ?Other Android NDK API?

As a sum up to the programming portion of the book, here the author rounds some of the extra bits built into the standard Android SDK. It doesn?t go in to too much depth (you could probably get an entire book out of each library) but it gives you enough to give you start and a basic appreciation for what each library does.

Chapter 8 ?Porting and Using the Existing Libraries with Android NDK?

In the first of two patterns and practices chapters, this chapter covers re-using existing C++ libraries in your Androids apps which is very useful if you don?t want to write huge amounts of code yourself.? There are a vast amount of libraries both free and paid written in native code and harnessing them is crucial in all but the smallest of apps.

The chapter also covers some of the trickier parts of reusing libraries that require exception, RTTI, and STL support.

Chapter 9 ?Porting an Existing Application to Android with NDK?

Following on from the previous focus on re-using existing libraries, this chapter goes through how to take an existing native library and cross compile it for Android and then put a shim UI on it for use, the example is a nice image processing library which looks simple enough to explain all the basic concepts involved.

image

Additionally there are 2 bonus chapters which give the book a real feel of polish, both of these are accessible from the PacktPub site with your copy of the book, full details included on how to gain access to them are included in the Preface.

Bonus Chapter 1 ?Developing Multimedia Applications with NDK?

This chapter build a real world app using all of the techniques explained in the book including:

  • Porting and using the ffmpeg library to Android with NDK
  • Using the ffmpeg library to get media info and decoding / displaying video frames
  • Separating decoding and drawing with two threads
  • Seeking to playback and grabbing the frames while optimizing the performance of a multimedia app

Bonus Chapter 2 ?Developing Games with NDK?

Bringing back one of my childhood favourites this chapter leads you through downloading the freeware version (and source) to the original Wolfenstein 3D, then porting the entire game to Android including adding Android input / sensor systems and a new on screen input UI.

image

If you were looking for a reference manual for your shelf for how to build efficient Android apps and it will make a welcome addition, the bonus chapters really make the full picture so it was a shame they weren?t included in the base book but the fact they are free to anyone who has the book is very nice (get them now).

?

There is a lot of intro material included in the book including the programming guide but you must have an appreciation for Java / C++ first and read at least an ?Android for dummies? style book to learn the basic lingo.

?

Pros:
Cons:
  • Without the Bonus Sections there isn?t anything to tie everything together as a whole app, just lots of parts (as a reference book alone this should be expected)
  • No detail on managing Android Emulators which is a bit of a gap, emulators can be very tricky to setup correctly (expects devices only)

I can definitely say I learned a lot of new tips and tricks in this book and it makes a welcome companion to my reference shelf.? On my work with MonoGame this will aid me a great deal with some of the trickier backend performance problems than can be faced in complex 3D games.

The knowledge for how to really make the most out of third party native libraries will also be very handy to make games grow quicker.

All in all I can say I feel a much better Android programmer and will know where to look when my apps or games just don?t work right.

Canada?s Abel and Ware win bronze in three-metre synchro at aquatic worlds

Canadian divers Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware earned bronze in the women?s three-metre synchronized springboard at the world championships on Saturday.

Abel, from Laval, Que., and Ware, a Beloeil, Que., native, scored 292.08 for Canada?s second medal at the event. Eric Hedlin of Victoria won Canada?s first with a silver in the men?s five-kilometre open water competition.

More Related to this Story

China?s Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao took the three-metre gold, earning Wu a record sixth world title, while Italy?s Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape claimed silver with 307.80.

Abel is a two-time Olympian who teamed with Emilie Heymans the last two seasons earning bronze at the 2012 Olympics and silver at the last worlds in 2011 in Shanghai.

This year, Abel and Ware have enjoyed success together winning three international medals and two Canadian titles.

?I don?t think we have come close yet to reaching our full potential,? said Abel. ?I think we showed today how strong we are mentally by never giving up. We have a similar style and show a lot of height and power on our dives. I?m excited about the future.?

The Canadian pair had a rough start and were in 10th place with two dives remaining. However they climbed to sixth in the fourth round and third after their fifth and final twisting dive earned them a string of 7.5?s and 8.0?s.

Ware said the early rounds just fired her up.

?I was pretty angry going into that fourth dive,? said the 20-year-old. ?I was so pleased we got it in and then we sealed it with a great last dive.?

The Chinese pair?s almost flawless execution of all five dives framed by the dramatic backdrop of Barcelona?s skyline gave them the top total score of 338.40 points.

Wu has won nine world or Olympic gold medals in the three-metre synchronized springboard. The only major title to escape her was the 2005 world championship when she didn?t compete in the event.

This was Wu?s first major competition with Shi, who won gold in the one-metre springboard at the 2011 worlds.

Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia clocked 53 minutes 30.4 seconds to win the men?s open water. Hedlin was 1.2 seconds behind, and five-time world champion Thomas Lurz of Germany finished third, 1.8 back.

?I am really happy because I didn?t expect (to beat Lurz),? Hedlin said. ?It felt pretty good. I was trying to hold a top position and stay in everyone?s draft. In the final sprint Oussama was so much quicker than me and I couldn?t do anything to beat him.?

Earlier, China?s Li Shixin topped the preliminaries in the men?s one-metre springboard.

Li, the defending one-metre springboard champion, led the men?s qualification for Monday?s final with 405 points, but a poor last dive let France?s Matthieu Rosset finish only 0.5 points behind.

Li looked ready to end the preliminaries with a commanding points difference until he missed with a three-and-a-half somersault pike on the sixth and final dive and barely edged Rosset for the top spot.

Illya Kvasha of Ukraine was third in qualifying, followed by Alejandro Chavez of Mexico in fourth and Sebastian Morales of Colombia in fifth.

Francois Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., placed 27th.

'Bomber' cover issue could be boon for Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone Magazine viReuters

Accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is seen on the cover of the August 1 issue of "Rolling Stone" magazine in this handout image. Despite a boycott, magazine industry experts do not believe the controversy will hurt Rolling Stone's circulation

Rolling Stone may end up proving that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

The magazine likely won't be hurt by the social media firestorm and subsequent boycott over putting one of the alleged Boston bombers on the front cover. On the contrary, it could even see a boost, experts said on Thursday.

"It may be seen as a bad decision to put a criminal or a killer on the cover, but Rolling Stone took a gamble," said Samir Husni, director of the magazine innovation center at the University of Mississippi. "In the long-term this is not going to hurt them.

The reason? Most of the magazine's 1.46 million circulation comes from subscriptions.

At least five retailers, including CVS and Walgreens, said they will not sell the Rolling Stone issue featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its cover.

The picture, which accompanies a story titled "Jahar's World," shows the 19-year-old accused murderer with tousled hair, reminiscent of the magazine's iconic shots of rock stars like The Doors' Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan.

The issue ? which hits newsstands Friday ? depicts Tsarnaev above the headline, "The Bomber." The story, which features interviews with childhood friends, teachers and law enforcement agents, promises to reveal how a ?popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster."

"I don't think anybody truly believes this will hurt Rolling Stone," said Linda Ruth, a magazine publishing consultant with PSCS in New Hampshire.

"Rolling Stone knew going in they would get kicked out by retailers," she said. "What they get here is bigger than what they lose."

Rolling Stone, like most U.S. magazines, is subscription-driven. According to ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations), its newsstand sales are just 75,000 out of a total circulation of over 1.4 million last year.

"Newsstand sales are only a tiny proportion. But Rolling Stone also got more publicity than money can buy," he said, suggesting the controversy could help the magazine add more sales.

"They probably won't even notice this (boycott)," said Ryan Chittum, who covers business stories for the Columbia Journalism Review. "There may be a few cancellations but no big deal."

Husni also said there was a misconception that Rolling Stone is only about music and popular culture. "Rolling Stone is one of the few magazines still publishing in-depth and long-form investigative articles in the U.S.

"This is nothing new to Rolling Stone," he said of the magazine, which won a National Magazine Award for its 1970 prison interview with mass murderer Charles Manson, who was featured on the cover.

Two years ago, Rolling Stone's story on Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, included unflattering comments about Vice President Joe Biden and other White House House officials and led to McChrystal's resignation.

"Unfortunately, the public is emotionally driven and this mass hysteria is the biggest threat to journalism," said Husni. "This is not Kim Kardashian, this is a serious mag and journalists cannot be driven by public opinion. You can't allow the public to dictate what journalists do."

He said people were comparing the cover photo to Dylan or Morrison or Bono. "That's the problem. The glamorization of the photo shows that people did not read the article."

Rolling Stone was co-founded by Jann Wenner who is still owner and chief editor. It has always been known for its musical coverage and for political reporting by journalists such as Hunter S. Thompson. But in the 1990s, Wenner changed its format to appeal to a younger readership interested in TV, movie stars and popular music.

It was not the only magazine cover to spark controversy. Time magazine had a women breastfeeding her toddler son on its cover recently and there was a very pregnant and very naked Demi Moore on the front of Vanity Fair, while The New Yorker had Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie snuggling on a couch as they watch the Supreme Court justices on TV after the Defense of Marriage Act decision.

"The number of people who never read Rolling Stone who buy this issue will outnumber the people who boycott it," said Bob Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.

He said it stirred up emotions because people like to think of terrorists and criminals as inhuman monsters. "That cover made him look human, like us, and that makes people nervous," said Thompson. "If they had used the police mug-shot, there would be no issue.

"Some bad publicity can be very useful," said Thompson.

U.S. Army Europe commander joins senior military leaders for visit to exercise Rapid Trident 2013

YAVORIV, Ukraine -- U.S. Army Europe Commanding General Lt. Gen. Donald Campbell Jr. joined 23 other senior military and civilian officials July 17 to observe training here as part of exercise Rapid Trident 2013.

The visitors included U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft, Ukrainian Land Forces Commander Col. Gen. Genadiy Vorobiov, Ukrainian Chief Deputy of the First General Staff Adm. Igor Kabanenko and several ranking partner nation officers.

Rapid Trident 2013 is a U.S. Army Europe-led, multinational field training and command post exercise taking place at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv that involves approximately 1,300 troops from 17 nations. The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability between forces and promote regional stability and security. The exercise began July 8 and ends tomorrow.

Campbell and other distinguished visitors watched demonstrations and discussed ways to improve the exercise and how Rapid Trident affects multinational cooperation and battlefield readiness.

"It is an important exercise every year that allows the United States to participate with multiple nations and our good friends in Ukraine," said Campbell.

The first demonstration involved a British platoon from the Royal Irish Regiment defending a position and bringing in air support followed by a Ukrainian helicopter-borne quick-reaction force to support the platoon's counterattack.

Paratroopers from the 3rd Platoon of USAREUR's Attack Company, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), demonstrated how to react to an ambush while travelling in vehicles. During that demonstration the paratroopers radioed Ukrainian medical helicopters to land and evacuate a simulated casualty.

Others scenario involved Ukrainian paratroopers calling in helicopter gunships to suppress a suspected terrorist camp before parachuting in to secure the camp; Romanian mechanized forces demonstrating a raid to capture a high-value target hiding in a building within a specified time limit; and a Ukrainian pararescue team jumping in to support ground troops by evacuating a simulated casualty into a hovering helicopter with a hoist.

"The opportunity to see the training center first-hand and to receive excellent briefing throughout the whole exercise has really been a highlight," said Campbell. "I believe we have certainly met the training objectives for Rapid Trident 2013."

(AP) ? The capture of the homegrown boss of Mexico's most feared drug cartel wasn't discussed publicly by residents of this northern border city and not a word appeared in the local newspapers a day after the arrest of the Zetas' Miguel Angel Trevino Morales.

After all, this is a town where bodies have swung from a local overpass ? nine on one night last year. Decapitated heads frequently have been dropped along roadsides, and grenades have been tossed in the vicinity of anyone who dared protest, all in an effort to secure Trevino Morales' reign.

In low voices and away from prying eyes, residents said Tuesday they were anxiously awaiting a violent response. Trevino Morales was a local thug who had fought ferociously to control this valuable route for trafficking drugs and migrants, and residents believe his takedown is unlikely to pass unanswered.

Mexican Marines nabbed Trevino Morales and two others on a dirt road southwest of the city Monday without a shot being fired. On Tuesday, residents held their tongues and waited. Soldiers stood guard behind stacked sandbags, while Marines, state and federal police cruised the city of 350,000 residents in highly visible armed convoys.

"We're waiting," said Antonio Ybarra Martinez. The 54-year-old wasn't talking about passing the time with his two friends in the slim shade of a downtown parking lot. He meant waiting for bloodshed.

"Truth is, it's a little tense," chimed in his friend, who only gave his name as Sergio. "There could be reprisals." Sergio, 44, who described himself as a laborer, noted that Trevino Morales was from Nuevo Laredo and has family that could push for a response.

Nuevo Laredo has the feel of a border city where commerce rules. The downtown is a grid of congested narrow streets filled with businesses. Street performers jostle with windshield cleaners for drivers' attention at the busiest intersections. Meanwhile tractor-trailers filled with products for the U.S. market rumble along wide roads on the perimeter toward the international bridges.

On Tuesday, four pickup trucks full of state police armed with assault rifles sat across the street from city hall where grenades have been lobbed in the past. Not surprisingly, a city spokesman declined to comment and the mayor was unavailable. City officials also had nothing to say in February after their police chief, Roberto Balmori Garza, disappeared, except that they were waiting for him to come back.

    They're still waiting.

A truckload of soldiers sat amid shiny new Fords at a dealership on the outskirts of the city. No one was willing to talk there either. This is the art of survival in Nuevo Laredo, the lessons of experience. In 2011, the Zetas targeted a nascent attempt by residents to share information in an online chat room. At least three apparent users of Nuevo Laredo en Vivo were killed, including a woman who was decapitated. In case there was any mistake about the message, the head of Maria Elizabeth Macias, or "Laredo Girl," was left atop a keyboard.

The violence could also come from rivals outside the Zetas, residents say.

The Zetas and the Sinaloa cartel have been fighting over Nuevo Laredo for years. Five international bridges connect the city with Laredo, Texas, and make it the southern border's busiest commercial port of entry. Several years of calm followed a bloody battle in 2005, reportedly won by the Zetas.

In recent years, however, violence has resumed, with the Zetas fending off attacks from the reportedly allied Sinaloa and Gulf cartels.

There's a crossroads with an overpass on the outskirts of Nuevo Laredo that is one of its busiest. A wide road flanked by assembly plants such as Sony and a Modelo beer distributor passes under the city's main artery.

Twenty-three bodies that turned up on one day in May 2012, were supposedly part of that battle with the Zetas' rivals. Fourteen of those were found decapitated and dumped near city hall, while the other nine were hung from that overpass. Messages threatened the Zetas' former benefactors, the Gulf cartel.

Within sight of that overpass on Tuesday, a man said the arrest was good news that everyone knew, but no one was speaking of publicly.

"They almost don't comment at all," said the man who declined to give his name out of safety concerns. He said people don't want to get involved, even in conversation about organized crime. The city has so far been quiet, he said, but after nightfall they will see "if it gets ugly."

The man said he hardly goes anywhere except home and work and he didn't expect improvement. The problem is that there are always others ready to fill the void, he said.

Trevino Morales was his case in point. Z-40, as he was called, already was reportedly running the cartel's operations when Heriberto Lazcano, one of the founding members and ostensible leader, was killed by the Mexican navy in neighboring Coahuila state last year. But Lazcano's death cleared the way for Trevino Morales.

And the violence doesn't exclusively affect locals.

In April 2010, a small explosive device was thrown over the fence of the U.S. consulate downtown causing minor damage and no injuries. The U.S. State Department temporarily closed the location before later reopening.

Now, Nuevo Laredo residents are watching to see who comes next, fearful the succession could bring on a new wave of violence.

"No one knows who are the good ones or the bad ones," said a downtown convenience store manager who declined to give his name. He complained the blanket of fear in the city had long cut into his sales. Many downtown clubs and discos have closed because no one will go out after dark, he said. He claimed to not even have heard about Trevino Morales' arrest because he doesn't have a television in his store and there was nothing about it in the newspaper. "The truth is, the situation is very difficult. Nobody speaks of this world."

Facebook's Sales Chief Explains Why He's Leaving (FB)

    tom arrix facebook linkedin

    Linkedin

    ?

Many top-tier Facebook employees have recently announced their departure from the social media giant.

Without naming his next move, U.S. sales chief Tom Arrix gave some indication yesterday ? appropriately posted on his Facebook ? as to why he's leaving after seven years:

From 8m users in 2006 to 1.2 billion today and counting!

I want to let you all know that I?ll be leaving Facebook and plan to spend a lot of time with my family over rest of the summer. This was an incredibly difficult decision to make. I feel strongly that the work I set out to take on here at FB is complete, we built the foundation for the future of our Ads business. And because of that, it's an ideal time for me to move on. I'm really excited to take some time but so energized to explore what's next to build.

    Emphasis is ours.

Before thanking usual suspects Mike Zuckerberg, Mike Murphy, Sheryl Sandberg, and company, Arrix touted his ad team for their "world class" work and accomplishments:

We crafted a vision that allowed marketers to better connect their brands with people, we started from scratch and built a multi-billion dollar business, we adopted and excelled at mobile advertising faster than anyone could imagine and we have the most passionate and amazing teammates around the world. In short, we have risen to every single challenge put in front if us, because collectively, we are the strongest team and company out there. In my heart, I know the best is yet to come, and I can't wait to see what Facebook accomplishes in the years ahead.

Read the rest of his post here.

Other coworkers that left Facebook in the last few months have gone to Shift, Intercom, and Dropbox.

South Korea accuses North Korea of cyberattacks

    Getty Images

SEOUL ? South Korea accused North Korea on Tuesday of mounting cyberattacks on the websites of its presidential office and other government agencies, saying it had identified signature malicious computer codes and an Internet address.

The cyberattacks took place last month, on the anniversary of the beginning of the 1950-53 Korean War which left the peninsula divided between the rival countries.

North Korea has been suspected of masterminding previous cyberattacks on South Korea, including one in March that paralyzed tens of thousands of computers and servers at major broadcasters and banks.

North Korea has repeatedly denied responsibility for such attacks saying it has also been a victim of hacking.

South Korean officials said they had detected North Korean involvement in the latest cyberassault that shut down several sites including those of the presidential office and the conservative ruling party.

"An IP address within North Korea's bandwidth was found," Chun Kilsoo, an official at the state-run Korea Internet and Security Agency, told a briefing, referring to a computer's internet protocol address.

The malicious computer codes and technique of the attack were similar to those detected in previous hacking attacks traced to the North, officials added.

The accusation comes as the two Koreas wrangle over the reopening of a joint factory park just inside North Korea that North Korea closed during a period of tension that began when it conducted its third nuclear test in February.

They failed to reach agreement on Monday on the reopening of the complex.

South Korea has not confirmed findings by U.S. online security company McAfee that a group of hackers was behind a string of cyberattacks on South Korea dating back to 2009 aimed at spying on its military.

South Korea's defense minister said at a recent conference that North Korea had about 3,000 highly trained cyber warfare personnel, according to media reports.

In March, the North suggested the United States was behind cyber attacks on its Internet servers after reports of disruptions to its main news services.

The hacker collective known as Anonymous said it had attacked North Korean websites on the anniversary of the Korean War.

The group denied through Twitter posts any involvement in attacks on South Korea.

Putin wants Snowden out of Russia, but asylum still on the table

    Alexei Nikolsky / AP file

Russian President Vladimir Putin listens during a meeting with prosecutor general Yuri Chaika, not pictured, at the Novo-Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow on July 9.

    By Alexei Anishchuk, Reuters

GOGLAND ISLAND, Russia - President Vladimir Putin said on Monday he wanted Edward Snowden to leave after three weeks holed up at a Moscow airport, but also signaled that the former U.S. spy agency contractor was moving towards meeting Russia's asylum conditions.

Snowden flew to Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on June 23 in the hope of traveling on to a country that would offer him protection from the United States after he divulged details of U.S. government intelligence programs.

Putin said Washington had trapped Snowden by preventing him from reaching other countries that might shelter him but, wary of upsetting Moscow's former Cold War enemy, has said Russia will grant him political asylum only if he stops actions that could be harmful to the United States.

"As soon as there is an opportunity for him to move elsewhere, I hope he will do that," Putin said during a visit to Gogland Island in the Gulf of Finland.

"The conditions for (Russia) granting him political asylum are known to him. And judging by his latest actions, he is shifting his position. But the situation has not been clarified yet."

Snowden, 30, told human rights campaigners on Friday at a meeting in Sheremetyevo's transit area that he was seeking temporary asylum in Russia until he can travel safely to Latin America, where three countries have said they might take him in.

He has been unable to reach any of those countries - Nicaragua, Venezuela or Bolivia - because there are no direct flights from Moscow and he would risk having his passage barred by the United States and its allies.

The case is an increasingly awkward problem for Putin as Moscow and Washington try to improve relations and he prepares for a summit with President Barack Obama in Moscow in early September, just before a summit of G20 leaders in Russia.

"We have certain relations with the United States and we don't want you to damage our ties with your activity," Putin said, referring to Snowden.

Asked to comment on what comes next for Snowden, Putin, a former KGB spy, said: "How do I know? It's his life, his fate."

    UNINVITED GUEST

He went on to distance Russia from Snowden and his political activities and, as on previous occasions when he has spoken about the case in public, avoided taking the opportunity to gloat at the United States' failure to catch him.

"He came to our territory without invitation, we did not invite him. And we weren't his final destination. He was flying in transit to other states. But the moment he was in the air ... our American partners, in fact, blocked his further flight," Putin said.

"They have spooked all the other countries, nobody wants to take him and in that way, in fact, they have themselves blocked him on our territory," he said.

Washington has revoked Snowden's passport and wants him extradited to the United States to face espionage charges.

Russia often accuses the United States of failing to practise at home what it preaches on human rights abroad, and many pro-Kremlin politicians have cast Snowden as a defender of civil rights. Putin has also accused the United States of backing protesters who have demanded an end to his long rule.

But the Kremlin has avoided parading Snowden before cameras and has repeatedly avoided embarrassing the United States over the young American's flight from U.S. justice.

Tatyana Lokshina of the American-based campaign group Human Rights Watch said after meeting Snowden on Friday that he saw no problem with Putin's asylum conditions because he believed he had done no harm to the United States. Putin did not say what prompted him to believe Snowden's stance was shifting.

Russia has made clear it regards the transit area between the airport runway and passport control as neutral territory and signaled it does not want to upset the United States further by allowing Snowden to step onto what it considers Russian soil.

Andy Murray: At last, British tennis has someone to celebrate

For the first time in 50 years, a British player won the men?s title at Wimbledon and this fan cheered all the way from Beijing.?

Andy Murray of Britain poses with the trophy after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia during the Men's singles final match at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships in Wimbledon, London, Sunday, July 7, 2013.

In the end, it did not happen as I had imagined. But then, I had almost stopped imagining it anyway. So the fact that I was staying up into the dead of night in Beijing, watching the tennis match on television, and only pretending to myself that I was enjoying a rare summer afternoon at home in London, scarcely mattered.

But one thing I did not have to pretend: For the first time since I began wielding a tennis racquet as an eager boy 50 years ago, a British player won the men?s title at Wimbledon.

Andy Murray?s victory, ending a 77-year drought for British men?s tennis at the sport?s historic home, was one I would have loved to have savored in England, where the entire nation was egging him on. But even sitting alone in a darkened room on the other side of the globe, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck as Novak Djokovic struck his last losing shot into the net.

The life of a British tennis fan has not been a happy one for the past 80 years or so. I can just remember Angela Mortimer, an Englishwoman, winning the Wimbledon ladies? championship in 1961, and I was jumping up and down with excitement when Virginia Wade won the centenary Wimbledon in 1977.

But when it came to the men, all we have had is also-rans. There's Tim Henman, for example, who was a British hero around the turn of the century despite the fact that he never made it as far as the finals of any Grand Slam tournament.

And when I was a teenager, we all worshipped Roger Taylor. But not for his triumphs, unfortunately ? he never got beyond the semi-finals at Wimbledon. Instead we admired him for his very British sportsmanship: In 1973, I recall, after being declared the winner of a quarter-final against Bjorn Borg with a serve that Mr. Borg disputed, Mr. Taylor offered to play the point again. He won that match eventually, but later lost his semi-final.

Today, at last, British tennis has someone other than gallant losers to celebrate.

    And yet, and yet...

Andy Murray is doubtless a great guy and an honorable man. But if an umpire called his match point serve "in," you can bet he would take his victory whatever his opponent?s doubts.

And who could blame him, especially now that ?Hawkeye? can resolve such doubts in the blink of a computer?s eye?

I should stop worrying. And perhaps, just for the day, we can be let off Rudyard Kipling?s admonition in his poem ?If,? inscribed above the entrance to Centre Court:

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same

Gallant losers are all very well, but after 77 years, your very own Wimbledon champion is worth celebrating.?

What was supposed to be a weekend celebration of the musical TV series "Glee" turned into an impromptu memorial of song and dance for Cory

Monteith after news of the "Glee" co-star's death rocked a "Glee" fan convention in England.

The hundreds of "gleeks," as they're known ? joined a chorus of thousands worldwide who took to social media with similar expressions about Monteith's passing. The actor's struggles with addiction echoed those of other young stars whose premature deaths also left young fans grieving.

"The whole day was simultaneously the best and worst experience of my life," said Chloe Harvey, an 18-year-old fan from Portsmouth, England. "The news was devastating. No one had any idea what to say or do. It just shows how much of a truly amazing guy Cory was that everyone was so shocked and emotional about the news. Everyone was crying and sharing their stories."

Monteith, 31, was found dead in his Vancouver, British Columbia, hotel room on Saturday, according to police, who said an autopsy is expected Monday to determine the cause of death.

Police said Monteith had been out with people earlier, but video and electronic records from the hotel indicated he returned to his room by himself early Saturday morning. He was believed to be alone when he died.

The Fox network and the producers of "Glee," including 20th Century Fox Television, called Monteith an exceptional performer "and an even more exceptional person." They said he was "a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously." Lea Michele, Monteith's "Glee" co-star and real-life girlfriend, asked for privacy upon hearing the news of his death.

While it's not known what caused his death, Monteith's passing recalls the lives of Heath Ledger, Corey Haim and River Phoenix ? actors who battled substance abuse and died in their 20s and 30s. Monteith talked bluntly about struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, calling it a serious problem and telling Parade magazine in 2011 he was "lucky to be alive."

Monteith admitted himself to a treatment facility in April for substance addiction and asked for privacy as he took steps toward recovery, a representative said at the time. Michele told People magazine that she loved and supported him and was proud he was seeking help. It was not Monteith's first time in rehab. He also received treatment when he was 19.

"I think kids really need a place to go and feel like they belong," he said in the video posted the site for Project Limelight, a Vancouver charity offering theater and arts programs to at-risk youth. "When I was a kid, I struggled a lot with who I was and where my life was going and what I was interested in. And I was fortunate to have the arts inspire me."

Monteith similarly moved fans. At the weekend "Glee" convention, instead of planned revelry like singing competitions and autograph sessions with actors who've played members of the rival Warblers glee club, organizers Starfury Conventions rescheduled the final day of the three-day event at Heathrow's Thistle Hotel so the 250 attendees could mourn him together.

"We all woke up to hear the story, and no one really wanted to believe it was true," said Chloe-Louise Bond, a 22-year-old fan from Wakefield, England. "Walking into the main room, you could just feel the tragedy in the air, absolute strangers became a family right in that moment. Everyone was crying and hugging and just trying to get over the shock."

It was a day filled with sadness and songs. The attendees chanted "Cory! Cory! Cory!" In unison, they sang tunes like "Don't Stop Believin'," the Journey cover crooned by Monteith in the high school-set musical's first episode. Curt Mega, Telly Leung and other actors who've played Warblers led a group discussion with fans about their memories of Monteith.

"Glee," with its catchy song-and-dance numbers and high-profile guest stars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears, became an instant hit when it debuted in 2009 and made celebrities of Montieth and the rest of the relatively unknown cast. Over the past four seasons, he delivered renditions of such classics as U2's "One" and R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion."

Monteith served as the show's resident hunk with a heart of gold. He played Finn Hudson, a football quarterback with two left feet who found more camaraderie in the choir room than on the football field. After his character graduated high school, Hudson sought out to find himself before settling on what he wanted to do with his life: become a teacher and mentor.

Outside the Vancouver hotel where Monteith's body was discovered, a makeshift memorial popped up where fans left flowers and notes commemorating the actor. #RipCoryMonteith and #StayStrongLea became trending topics on Twitter.

Goodyear Is Building Super Advanced Carbon Fiber Zeppelins

The Goodyear Blimps have been around since 1925, when The Pilgrim was launched with 60 hp worth of air-cooled radial power. Today, the company is preparing the newest generation of their Zeppelins developed by Zee Germans.

ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik's design offers better maneuverability and greater speed. Not like the old ones had problems in this department, because if you've seen The Junkman, you know that a Goodyear Blimp can almost land on Sunset Boulevard. Built at Goodyear?s hangar in nearby Suffield, the new fleet will use an aluminum and carbon fiber frame wrapped in a polyester envelope supplied by DuPont. 297,527 cubic feet of helium will take them to the clouds.

During its long operational history, Goodyear has built and operated more than 300 lighter-than-air vehicles, including two large rigid airships ? the U.S.S. Macon and U.S.S. Akron. As of today, there are three blimps in the fleet in the USA:

GOP candidates raise little initial money in race for Murphy?s congressional seat

    by George Bennett | July 15th, 2013

The two declared Republican candidates for freshman Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy?s Palm Beach-Broward congressional seat have filed initial Federal Election Commission reports that are unlikely to deter other potential GOP candidates from getting into the race.

Juno Beach Vice Mayor Pro Tem Ellen Andel raised $14,455 in her first two months as a candidate while incurring $20,171 in debts and obligations.

Alan Schlesinger, the former mayor of Derby, Conn., who was the GOP Senate nominee in the Nutmeg State in 2006, did not raise a penny but plunked $25,000 of his own money into the race.

Murphy, a top GOP target for 2014, has announced that he raised more than $520,000 in the last quarter and has more than $1 million in cash on hand.

The latest FEC reports cover money raised and spent through June 30. Former Republican state Rep. Carl Domino announced this month that he?s running as well. Other potential candidates include state Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, and former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner.
