Of those cats who shared my home and became a permanent part of my feline family for some period of time, I have lost 13. I say now that it is never easy, but I have learned to prepare myself for the experience and know what at least seems normal for myself.

I?m going to tell a little story of my own loss and redemption, of loving again after a loss. It has a happy ending.

In 2006 and 2007, I lost my four oldest cats, three of them among my longest-lasting friends. During that year of loss I fostered a litter of kittens born to a neighbor?s cat, found homes for three and one stayed with me. I didn?t want a kitten because caring for geriatric animals in their end stages is time-consuming and emotionally exhausting and I felt I had no time for a kitten. But the little black sweetheart seemed to understand my distraction, and after my Stanley, at age 25, finally let go of his love of this world, I turned my attention to my Lucy, my new life, and the remaining four of my feline family.

But when I had Lucy spayed three months later, she was diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis, a form of it that is always fatal, and I lost her three months after that.

If we even consider adopting again, we may feel we are betraying the pet we?ve lost, that we may be trying to replace the cherished companion who is gone or worst of all that if we move on that they will be forgotten.

And while the loss is fresh, the memory of the pain of loss is just too real.

But our bonds of love are never the same in any two relationships, and our hearts are big enough to hold a lifetime of loves. As I look through all those years of photos and see all the ones I?ve lost, I don?t remember their loss, I remember their love, I remember the years they spent with me.

I?ve known people who?ve gone right out and adopted another pet, others who waited months or years, or simply waited until another animal in need showed up on their doorstep, and still others who have never adopted again, preferring instead to remember and cherish the pets they?d lost. For each of them, the decision was right.

The important thing was that it was their decision, they were comfortable with the situation and they felt it best honored their pet.

As your period of grieving progresses, you may find your home feels empty, and you miss not only the pet you?ve lost but the companionship in general, the sharing of your routines and your space.

But mostly, we choose to live with pets because of that bond we have with them that we can?t even have with another human, that total devotion and unconditional love that is the gift we share with an animal.

And our precious animal companions remember how we filled their life when we adopted them?surely they?d want that for another animal. And, in life, they always wanted, and often worked hard for, our happiness as part of their love for us, and they would be the best to know that the love of a pet is essential for their human, and would not want us to be sad and lonely.

As much as you loved, so deeply do you grieve, but the grief wears away and leaves only the love, like a diamond. Look back through your photos and see your lifetime of pets, and what do you remember? Not the grief, only the love.

This is how we began, and probably one of the reasons I didn?t work too hard to find a home for them when the time came?though a family of adult black cats is not the easiest to place, but in truth, I?m glad for that. I will always remember that time of intense grief and the joy of healing and loving again, every time I look at them.

The Indian utility major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) which is the largest UV seller in India is now looking at the premium SUV category in which it does not have a presence. Now it has been reported that as part of foraying into the premium SUV segment, M&M would launch the already announced global vehicle "XUV-500" and the Rexton and Korando from its Korean subsidiary Ssangyong Motor Corporation.

The reports quoted Mahindra and Mahindra Senior Vice-President Marketing (automotive division) Vivek Nayer as saying "We do not have a SUV in the price range between Rs 11 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.. Currently we have the Scorpio priced from Rs eight lakh to Rs 11 lakh. Our new XUV500 targeted at the young audience will be launched by this year. This SUV will be priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 20 lakh range.?? Declining to elaborate he said, "it will be launched simultaneously in India and South Africa. At the time of launch it will be offered in two wheel and four wheel drive options.??

It was mentioned that M&M would also bring in two premium SUVs -- the "Rexton" and "Korando" from Korean auto maker Ssangyong Motor Corporation next year. "The Rexton and Korando SUVs will be introduced (in India) by middle of next year," he said. It was reported that he said the Korando was launched globally about two months back and was received well in the market. Obama administration denounces plans to dock UN (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration on Wednesday stepped up criticism of calls by some members of Congress to withhold or slash U.S. funding of the United Nations, saying such moves were "backward" and would seriously undermine America's role as a world leader.

Republican-led efforts in Congress could force the U.S. to withhold half of its annual contribution to the world body. A senior State Department official said the administration's engagement with the United Nations and promise to pay its dues had bolstered once-languishing U.S. influence at the world body that should not be squandered.

"We oppose the backwards calls we again are hearing to withhold U.S. dues, given the impact doing so would have on U.S. influence and leadership across the UN system," said Esther Brimmer, the assistant secretary of state for international organizations.

Brimmer did not specify the target of her criticism, but it was clearly directed at a bill introduced in the House last week by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., with 52 co-sponsors. The measure would block U.S. funds for any United Nations entity that supports giving Palestine an elevated status at the U.N., and ban U.S. contributions to the U.N. Human Rights Council and an anti-racism conference seen as a platform for anti-Israel rhetoric.

Ros-Lehtinen, the head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has long been a critic of the United Nations. Her legislation would also withhold a portion of U.S. dues to the international body if it does not change its funding system so that dues are paid on a voluntary rather than assessed basis. Her proposal would withhold 50 percent of the U.S. nonvoluntary regular budget contributions if, after two years, 80 percent of the U.N. regular budget is not funded on a voluntary rather than assessed basis.

"The administration is entitled to its opinion, but it's not entitled to its own facts," she said in a statement. "Our bill's purpose is to leverage our contributions to reform the U.N. and make it work again, not to attack the U.N. Our bill is about strengthening U.S. global leadership, not reducing it."

Ros-Lehtinen added: "It's disappointing that the administration continues to aim its fire at the U.N.'s critics instead of at the U.N.'s problems."

Brimmer dismissed as "alarmist" concerns that the U.N. is working against U.S. interests. While she allowed that the U.N. needs reform, she maintained that could be better achieved with more and not less U.S. involvement. She said U.S. participation in numerous U.N. agencies had helped to reduce unfair criticism of Israel and gave powerful voice to efforts to condemn human rights abusers.

"We reject arguments made by some that would cede global leadership to those who would not act in our interest, or abandon the real, tangible gains that have come with enhanced U.S. multilateral engagement," Brimmer told an audience at the U.S. Institute for Peace. "We reject also the alarmist suggestions that the U.N. is somehow running roughshod over U.S. interests. Aside from being factually wrong, they ignore the many ways that U.S. multilateral diplomacy advances our national security and supports the security of our allies, partners and friends."

U.S. membership in the U.N. Human Rights Council, in particular, has brought at least some credibility back to the much-maligned body that the Bush administration boycotted, Brimmer argued. Withdrawing from it, as some lawmakers want, would be disastrous.

"Right now, the one thing we could do to reverse those gains would be to walk away and hand leadership back to those who would rather the Human Rights Council not be a serious human rights body," she said. "Yet that is exactly what some are now proposing we do: Pull down the flag and go home. Leave the Human Rights Council to the human rights abusers. Announce in a full voice that until HRC membership achieves perfection, the United States will treat the entire organization with contempt.

"And for good measure, broaden these self-inflicted injuries by withholding U.S. funding across the UN system," Brimmer said.

In the 2010 budget year the U.S. provided $7.7 billion to the U.N. for its regular budget, peacekeeping and other programs, up from $6.1 billion the previous year.

The State Department spoke out against the legislation after it was introduced, but Brimmer's comments significantly raised the rhetoric of the opposition ahead of the annual U.N. General Assembly session set to begin in New York later this month.
