BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? After nearly seven decades, the U.S. embassy is moving to a new location just north of the Romanian capital.
The embassy said in a statement Tuesday the building, which was built from scratch starting from 2009, cost $100 million (euro70.8 million). It is located in a newly developed area near a commercial center, between Bucharest's two airports, and will open on Sept. 14.
It is located on a street named in honor of a 76-year-old Romanian-born Holocaust survivor and professor, Dr. Liviu Librescu, who died trying to save his students during the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre in which a gunman killed 32 teachers and students on campus.
The current building, which has housed the U.S. embassy since 1944, will close on Sept. 7.
